7-27&28-1973 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen

On July 27& 28, 1973 an estimated 600,000 descended on the Finger Lakes village of Watkins Glen in upstate New York for Summer Jam, a concert featuring the Allman Brothers band the Grateful Dead and The Band. Staged near the fabled Watkins Glen race track, the concert was scheduled for the 28th but hordes of early arrivals got to hear the Dead and the Allman Brothers do extended soundchecks the day before. The Band's set during the actual concert was interrupted by a potent thunder storm. A defiant Garth Brooks remained on stage of it to accompany the storm with dramatic organ flourishes until a tremendous crash of thunder sent him scrambling for cover, too.
