Giants Bring Out Their Dead

A few hours after Steven Tyler did the honors for Bruins fans in Boston (story) (video), Grateful Dead veterans Bob Weir and Phil Lesh sang the National Anthem Thursday (10/21) before the Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies faced off in the National League playoff series on the left coast.  It was an encore performance for the pair, who also did the Anthem the night the Giants honored Jerry Garcia during a regular season game this year (story) (video) .Pro and anti groups used the occasion to lobby fans on a California November ballot measure on legalization of marijuana.  Tyler's mojo worked better in Beantown, where the Bruins dominated the Washington Capitals in a 4-1 game.  The Giants did not fare as well, dropping a 4-2 decision despite another strong pitching performance by young ace Tim Lincecum - who was busted in Washington state for possession of a small amount of pot after last season.  The Thursday game fell on the night before Timothy Leary's birthday, reminding us of a baseball feat that won't ever be acknowledged in Cooperstown, the 1970 no hitter Doc Ellis of the Pirates claims he pitched on LSD in 1970 (video).
