Guitarist Ronnie Montrose Dies

Ronnie Montrose was the whole package. Not only a virtuoso guitarist with an amazing range of capabilities, Montrose also had great musical instincts - something other artists recognized and appreciated.  His guitar work stood out on songs as different from one another as Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and Edgar Winter's Frankenstein.  He also recognized great talent, introducing the world to fellow guitarist and singer Sammy Hagar as the lead singer for the group Montrose in 1973.  Diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago, Montrose remained determined to continue performing and had recently been putting the finishing touches on a DVD that is expected to come out later this year.  Montrose was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Saturday (3/3).  Initial reports attributed his death to the effects of prostate cancer, a presumption the family did not correct until about the time coroner's report was issued nearly a month after his death.
