Crossroads Auction Draws Big Bids

The benefit auction of guitars and amps from the personal collection of Eric Clapton (story) shattered estimates by bringing in close to $2 million in bids. Earlier estimates had put the likely total at much less than half of the amount bidders put up for the honor of owning an instrument or amp belonging to the guitar great.  A 1948 Gibson Les Paul that experts had predicted would top off at around $30,000 went for nearly $83k.All told, the event raised close to $2.25 million for the Crossroads Centre, the drug and alcohol facility Clapton helped bankroll in Antigua a couple of decades ago.  Clapton did not attend the auction in New York City.  He was in LA for a concert Tuesday night (3/9).
