Long Road Home For Allman Brothers

At a time when just about all of the prominent American bands originated in or had migrated to big cities, The Allman Brothers Band was building its reputation as one of the great American bands while based in the small Georgia city of Macon.  Macon was also the home of one of Capricorn Records, the label the ABB, Marshall Tucker, Elvin Bishop, Wet Willie and several other Southern Rock musicians recorded for. The Allman Brothers Band will do its first concert in Macon since December, 1991 Friday (4/23) at the Macon City Auditorium.  How badly have they been missed? It took all of 5 minutes for the 2,700 tickets to sell-out. The decision to play the auditorium instead of the much bigger Macon Coliseum reflects the desire to make the night special for the band and audience. Gregg Allman equates the sound and atmosphere of the Coliseum to a '15,000 seat men's room'. While in town, Gregg, Butch Trucks and Jaimoe will officially open the Big House, the former residence of band and family members on Vineville Ave. that recently completed its conversion into a museum celebrating the legacy of the ABBGregg, who previewed the museum during a private tour in February, was impressed, saying, 'I was amazed there was so much memorabilia made abut the Allman Brothers.  There was so much of that stuff, and I don't have any of it!'  The return to Macon comes just before the band heads to the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
