The Allman Brothers Band opened its annual run of Big Apple shows in unfamiliar surroundings Thursday (3/11) with a visual dis of the venue that had played host to the band over a 20 year span. A backdrop during the opening set at the United Palace Theater displayed a circle with a diagonal line through it imposed over a photo of the Beacon Theater, which ousted the group in favor of a Cirque du Soleil booking. In a stroke of sweet, southern revenge, bad preview notices for a Chicago warm-up of the Cirque show scheduled for the Beacon, prompted officials to change producers - causing delays that will push the NYC start date to the end of April. The Allmans hit a snag too, the band announcing that several of their shows have been cut. (story)
