Art experts knew the collection of paintings David Bowie amassed was quite valuable, but estimates get tricky when factoring in what additional value a piece accrues by having been owned by a celebrity. That became clear when the first batch of works from the late singer's collection was auctioned by Sotheby's in London on Thursday (11/10). Most of the pieces in it exceeded estimates by substantail margins. The highest value for a painting produced a top of $9.04 million, more than twice the amount that had been anticipated, and a painting expected to sell for no more than $800,000 went for just over $3 million. All told, the first round of art produced more than $30 million in bids, and 300 more works are due to be auctioned today.
