After opponents made it clear they would fight Phil Lesh's plan to establish a muti-purpose music venue in Fairfax, California the former Grateful Dead bass player elected to withdraw his proposal rather than do battle over it (story), but also vowed to find a site in a community that would recognize the benefits of such a venue. That decision paid off when Lesh and his wife Jill purchased a property in nearby San Rafael, the town that the Grateful Dead offices were in. Lesh has bought the Seafood Peddler restaurant in the small city north of the Golden Gate Bridge. His plan is to convert the building next door into a performance space for 400 he has dubbed the Grate Room. In addition to the concert venue, the complex will include a restaurant and spaces that can be used for a variety of cultural and community events. Speaking with the Marin Independent Journal, Lesh said he looks forward to having Terrapin Crossroads operational within a couple of months and reviving '...the various lineups I've put together over the past 10 years.'
