The annual Light Of Day benefit concert in Asbury Park, NJ Saturday night (1/15) was nearly two hours into a Sunday morning by the time Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Joe Grushecky, Garland Jeffreys and others brought down the house with a version of Twist & Shout that left the musicians and the audience nearly too shell-shocked to do either. The 10+ minute apparent closer had put the wraps on a nearly 2 hour set by Springsteen with Grushecky and his band. But Bruce wasn't ready to pack it in. Grabbing an acoustic guitar, Springsteen serenaded the exhausted audience with an unplugged version of Thunder Road. The unannounced but widely expected appearance at the Paramount Theater by The Boss for the Parkinsons benefit began on an acoustic note when he joined Jesse Malin for a version of Broken Radio. He reappeared to do Heaven Help The Lonely with Willie Nile and Always A Friend with Alejandro Escovedo. Bruce did Your Own Worst Enemy on his own before being joined by Grushecky and his band for a set that drew from both of their catalogs. Videos
