U2 Tour Wraps In Pittsburgh

Heinz Field in Pittsburgh will be where U2 concludes its 360o tour, the multiple continent extravaganza the Irish Rockers kicked off in the Spring of 2009 with a concert in Barcelona, Spain.  Emergency back surgery to address a spinal injury Bono suffered in Germany while warming-up for a new leg of the tour in May of this year resulted in the postponement of a series of North American dates (story).  Tickets for the July 26, 2011 date go on sale this month, giving promoters almost a full year to earn interest on ticket proceeds.  The injury delay was an expensive interruption to what had been one of the brighter tour stories in an otherwise dismal period for a recession battered concert industry.  Promoters and venue operators suffered substantial losses on a number of tours into the summer, with an average of 40% of seats going unsold and many tours being scaled back or scuttled.  A stronger economic outlook and prospects that Fleetwood Mac, Van Halen and possibly the Rolling Stones will hit the road in 2011 have Live Nation and stadium operators cautiously optimistic about the coming year, but unless or until Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd decide to tour it will probably be a long time before a production approaching the scale of the U2 tour is mounted again.
