McCartney looks to Get Back music rights

Sony's recent purchase (story) of the a big stake of the publishing rights to Beatles songs that Michael Jackson bought about 30 years ago could be followed by Paul McCartney reclaiming the rights himself to songs he and John Lennon wrote.  A US copyright provision enacted in 1976 allows for original writers of material that has been acquired by others to reclaim their rights to it after 56 years.  That opens the door to Sir Paul to reacquire rights to some of the early songs he wrote and co-wrote as early as 2018.  Billboard reports that paul did file paperwork in December aimed at doing just that for 32 songs he had a hand in writing.  If the termination application is granted, the former Beatle would regain publishing his half of the rights for the US only.  Sony/ATV would retain rights to the other half outside of the US.
